How to teach your Dog to wear Doggles, dog goggles.
Who is Hiding behind those Doggles? |
1.Be patient.
Start by putting the doggles, dog goggles on your dog while outdoors only!
If you try this 1st step indoors, your Pup may be frightened by the sudden darkness or lack of light entering their eyes and cause immediate anxiety or even fear.2. Make the exercise of teaching your dog to wear doggles fun, fun, really fun !
Place your dog in bright sunlight if possible to allow them to see normally with the darkened lenses. This method will lessen the trauma of the sudden change in light opposed to starting the training indoors.Once outdoors, when you first put the doggles, "dog goggles" on your dog, distract your dog immediately by inviting favorite outdoor activity like fetching a ball or any normal play routine and treat them with praise or biscuits or both.
Their natural tendency may be to paw at these "strange objects" and to get them off my face. Woof, woof... woof, woof!
Reinforce your Pal by speaking in a high pitched excited voice. Repeat as necessary...
"These funky new things covering your eyes with straps around your head are otay, otay, otay, otayooo and are not going to hurt my buddy. Look how cute, cute cute puppy looks"
Seriously...If your dog is adamantly rejecting the doggles, DO NOT FORCE YOUR DOG TO WEAR THEM.
You must be calm and yet assertive. Loosing your temper will train wreck the process!
Constant distraction is the key to success here! Keep their thoughts off the goggles by positive reinforcement any way you can. Praise, praise, praise. "Baby Talk" your dog until your neighbors think you have completely lost your marbles.
Make your dog have so much fun that they will forget they are even wearing the new stuff on their face.
3.Repetition: Go through this training often and as frequently as possible.
Some dogs take to the new googles immediately, others may be resistant at first.
If you do this right the first try, your dog will be asking for their "shades" every time they go outdoors. That might be a stretch... however, it will be worth the effort once your Pup gets used to and acclimated to their new "Eye Protection"
The benefits of your dog wearing doggles are priceless and a testament to your commitment in really caring for your pet as part of the family!
